4 Days Gorillas & Volcanoes Adventure: A Journey Through Rwanda and Uganda

Upon arrival in Uganda, you’ll embark on a scenic drive from your arrival point (either Entebbe or Kigali) to Kisoro, located in southwestern Uganda. The road trip is a picturesque journey, offering beautiful views of rolling hills, lush green landscapes, and the majestic Virunga Mountains. Kisoro is often referred to as the “Switzerland of Africa” due to its stunning landscapes.

Check in at the charming Travellers Rest Hotel, known for its historical significance as a resting place for renowned primatologists like George Schaller and Dian Fossey. You can take some time to explore the garden, where they once relaxed, or stroll around Kisoro town to get a taste of the local life.

This is the day you’ve been waiting for—the exhilarating gorilla trekking experience in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. After an early breakfast, you will head to the park headquarters for a briefing about the gorilla trekking rules and safety measures. Bwindi is home to almost half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, making it a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a key destination for wildlife lovers.

The trek can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family you are tracking. As you hike through the dense afromontane forest, you’ll be surrounded by unique flora and fauna, listening to the sounds of the jungle. Once you spot the gorillas, you’ll have an hour to observe them in their natural habitat—an experience that leaves most trekkers in awe of these magnificent creatures.

After your trek, you’ll return to the lodge for a well-deserved rest. Feel free to share stories of your adventure over dinner.

Option 1:
For the adventurous, a climb up Mount Muhavura offers breathtaking views of the Virunga Volcanoes and the surrounding region. Standing at 4,127 meters, this dormant volcano, also known as the "Guide of the Mountains," provides a challenging but rewarding hike. The ascent takes approximately 8 to 10 hours, making it ideal for experienced hikers.

Option 2:
If you prefer a less physically demanding activity, consider going on a game walk to look for the rare and playful golden monkeys. These primates are endemic to the region, and spotting them among the bamboo forests of the Virungas is a highlight for nature enthusiasts.

Alternatively, you can take it easy and spend the day relaxing in the tranquil garden of Travellers Rest, enjoying a cup of locally brewed Ugandan coffee, while reflecting on the remarkable experiences of the past two days.

After breakfast, you will check out from your accommodation and begin your journey back. Depending on your onward travel plans, you can either return to Kigali or Entebbe, both offering scenic drives with opportunities for sightseeing along the way.
