Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park – Cultural Visit

You will be picked up early in the morning from your hotel or Kigali International Airport by your driver-guide. After a short briefing, you’ll embark on a scenic drive to Volcanoes National Park in Musanze District, about 2.5 hours away. The route offers incredible views of Rwanda’s rolling hills, terraced farmlands, and rural villages, giving you a taste of the country’s famous nickname, “The Land of a Thousand Hills.”

Upon arrival in Musanze, you may visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village (now known as the Gorilla Guardians Village), where you’ll interact with the local community, learn about traditional Rwandan culture, and watch performances of music, dance, and storytelling. This experience provides deep insights into Rwanda’s heritage and the lives of people who live near the gorilla habitat.

Later in the afternoon, you will check in at your lodge near Volcanoes National Park, where you can relax and enjoy the cool mountain breeze while preparing for the next day’s gorilla trekking adventure.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park – Return to Kigali

After an early breakfast, you’ll transfer to the park headquarters in Kinigi for a briefing by the park rangers at around 7:00 am. You’ll be assigned to a specific gorilla family and then begin your trek into the dense forest of Volcanoes National Park. The trek can take between 1 to 5 hours depending on the gorillas’ movements, but the reward is beyond measure — coming face to face with these gentle giants in their natural environment.

You will spend one unforgettable hour observing the gorillas as they feed, groom, and play. It’s an emotional and awe-inspiring encounter that leaves lasting memories. After the trek, return to the park headquarters to receive your trekking certificate and then enjoy lunch in Musanze.
