Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park stands as a bastion of conservation, nestled within the lush embrace of the Virunga Mountains. This sanctuary, spanning 62 square miles (160 square km), is a precious enclave safeguarding the critically endangered mountain gorillas. For a permit fee of $1,500, visitors can join a select group of eight individuals to encounter these awe-inspiring primates in their natural habitat.

For those fascinated by the legacy of primatologist Dian Fossey, a visit to her grave and research center is a must. Immortalized in the acclaimed film “Gorillas in the Mist,” this sanctuary serves as a poignant reminder of Fossey’s tireless efforts to study and protect mountain gorillas.

Another highlight of Volcanoes National Park is the chance to encounter golden monkeys, their playful antics and cherubic features captivating observers as they swing through the bamboo forests. With a permit priced at USD 100, visitors can witness these enchanting creatures in their natural habitat, darting amongst the foliage in search of delectable bamboo shoots.

Beyond its charismatic inhabitants, the park teems with a diverse array of wildlife, including forest elephants, buffalo, spotted hyenas, and an impressive assortment of bird species, offering ample opportunities for wildlife enthusiasts and birdwatchers to indulge their passions.

Getting to Volcanoes National Park

Accessing Volcanoes National Park is relatively straightforward, with most travelers arriving via Kigali International Airport. From there, a two-hour transfer transports visitors to Musanze, the bustling gorilla tourism hub. For independent travelers, public buses offer an affordable option, shuttling passengers from Kigali’s Nyabugogo bus station to Musanze for less than US$5.er to the park are required.
