🦍 A Gorilla Tour in Uganda: Up Close with the Gentle Giants
May 29, 2025
If you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife experience, a gorilla trekking tour in Uganda should be at the top of your bucket list. I recently returned from a journey that took me deep into the lush forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and it was nothing short of magical.
What Is Gorilla Trekking?
Gorilla trekking is a guided hike through the rainforest to observe wild mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Uganda is one of the only three countries in the world where you can do this — the other two being Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The experience is rare, intimate, and deeply moving.
Getting There
I flew into Entebbe International Airport and spent a night in Kampala before taking a scenic drive (or you can fly) to Bwindi, which lies in the southwest of Uganda. The roads can be bumpy, but the landscapes are stunning — rolling green hills, terraced farms, and friendly villages.
The Trekking Experience
On the day of the trek, we gathered early in the morning for a briefing. The rangers explained the rules — keep a safe distance, don’t look gorillas in the eye, and stay quiet. Then we set off, walking through dense forest, ducking under branches, and climbing muddy slopes.
The hike can take anywhere from 1 to 6 hours depending on where the gorillas are. It’s not easy, but totally worth it.
Meeting the Gorillas
After about three hours, our guide signaled us to stop and whispered, “They’re just ahead.” My heart raced. We tiptoed closer, and there they were — a family of mountain gorillas relaxing, eating, and playing just a few meters away. The silverback, massive and powerful, kept a watchful eye while the younger ones tumbled around like toddlers.
We were allowed to spend one hour with them, and that hour felt like a dream. Seeing their human-like expressions and gentle nature up close was both humbling and awe-inspiring.
What to Pack
- Good hiking boots (it gets muddy!)
- Long-sleeved shirts and pants (to protect from bugs and branches)
- Rain jacket (weather changes quickly)
- Camera (but no flash photography)
- Plenty of water and snacks
Tips for a Great Experience
- Book your permit early with Kurikayo Africa Adventures: Gorilla permits are limited and sell out quickly.
- Train a bit: The hike can be tough, so a bit of fitness helps.
- Hire a porter: They help carry your bag and support local families.
Final Thoughts
Gorilla trekking in Uganda isn’t just a tour — it’s an emotional journey into the heart of the wild. Seeing mountain gorillas in their natural environment is something I’ll never forget. If you ever get the chance, go. It will change how you see wildlife, conservation, and even yourself
